A lipoma is a harmless lump made of fat cells. Lipomas feel soft and move easily under the skin, are usually painless and grow slowly. They are most common on the trunk, shoulders, neck and arms.

Most lipomas do not need treatment, but some people choose to have them removed if they are uncomfortable, growing or in a visible place.

## How We Can Help

- Assessment to confirm the lump is likely to be a lipoma, and arranging an ultrasound scan if needed.
- Discussion of surgical removal for suitable lipomas, or referral to the appropriate surgical team for larger or deeper lumps.

## When to get urgent help

A lump that is larger than about 5 cm, growing quickly, painful, hard or deep should be assessed promptly.
