Rashes have many causes, including eczema, contact allergy, infections, reactions to medicines and conditions such as urticaria (hives). Some are short-lived; others recur and need a clear diagnosis.

Allergic contact dermatitis is a reaction to something touching the skin, such as fragrances, preservatives, hair dye, metals or rubber. Identifying the cause can make a lasting difference.

## When to get urgent help

Seek emergency help (call 999) for swelling of the lips, tongue or throat, difficulty breathing, or a rash with feeling very unwell. Get urgent medical advice for a rash that does not fade when a glass is pressed on it, or for widespread blistering or peeling skin.
