Molluscum contagiosum
Small, pearly, dome-shaped spots caused by a common viral infection in children.
Molluscum contagiosum is a harmless viral skin infection that is very common in children. It causes small, shiny, flesh-coloured bumps, often with a central dimple, which can spread through scratching or skin contact.
The spots usually clear on their own within 12 to 18 months, sometimes longer. As they clear they can become red and inflamed, which is often a sign the immune system is dealing with them.
How We Can Help
- Confirming the diagnosis and explaining the natural course.
- Treating eczema or itching around the spots, which can help stop them spreading.
- Discussing treatment options where spots are numerous, troublesome or in sensitive areas.
When to get urgent help: Seek advice promptly if spots are near the eye with a red or sore eye, or if your child has a weakened immune system.
